All students receiving financial aid from federal, state and/or Raritan Valley Community
College sources must be making Satisfactory Academic Progress at RVCC to establish and retain
eligibility for student financial aid. Enrolled students applying for financial aid for the first
time must have been making Satisfactory Academic Progress prior to applying for financial aid and
must continue to meet Satisfactory Academic Progress minimum standards.
All students must complete at least 67 percent of their attempted credits while they are enrolled at RVCC.
All attempted credits, including developmental and ESL, will be included when evaluating satisfactory academic progress standards.
Students must have a “C” average or its equivalent, which is a 2.00 cumulative grade point average
at RVCC, after four semesters. Please note that you must also maintain a 2.00
cumulative GPA to be in
Good Academic Standing for
academic purposes as well.
Students cannot receive financial aid for credits in excess of 150% of the credits required for graduation from their program.
For example, a Liberal Arts degree requires a maximum of 65 credits to graduate. A student working towards their Liberal Arts degree
may not receive financial aid for more than (65 x 150%) 97.5 attempted credits.
Students who fail to meet these minimum policy standards are not eligible
for financial aid, but do have the right to appeal for one semester of
Probationary Financial Aid.
In order to appeal, students must explain the circumstances that led to their not making academic progress, as
well as discuss what actions they have taken to ensure that they will be able to maintain satisfactory academic progress in the
future as well as correct their current deficiency. Students will also need to meet with an academic advisor to determine if the courses
that they are taking are appropriate for their major and personal situation.
Students will be notified in writing if their appeal has been accepted. If the appeal is accepted the
student will be granted one (1) semester of probationary financial aid after which they must meet the minimum standards for
academic progress in order to be eligible for future semesters of financial aid.
If the student's appeal is approved and they then do not meet the terms of their appeal after one semester their financial
aid will be cancelled. Students are encouraged to take courses at their own expense until they meet the minimum SAP standards.
In order to receive financial aid, the student must meet the minimum standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress.
Students who have met the minimum standards of academic progress after their semester of financial aid probation will be eligible for reinstatement of
their financial aid. Students who have met the minimum standards of academic progress at their own expense will be eligible for reinstatement
of their financial aid.
Students who withdraw from courses, receive a grade of incomplete, repeat or fail a course during a given term, will
have these courses count towards courses attempted. An incomplete course is treated the same as a failed course.
All repeated courses will be counted toward credits attempted when evaluating satisfactory academic progress standards.
Federal Regulations make no provisions for academic renewal. All courses in a student’s academic history will be reviewed
in regards to financial aid eligibility.
Satisfactory Academic Progress for Financial Aid will be reviewed annually once a student has applied for financial aid. For students
enrolled in a certificate program, Satisfactory Academic Progress for Financial Aid will be reviewed each semester.
Determination will be calculated once grades have been calculated by the Registrar's Office each semester.
