The awards, which were established in 1990, honor outstanding high-achieving African American students in the areas of scholarship, athletics, the arts and community service, and scholarship awards. Students in Somerset and Hunterdon counties are nominated by their guidance counselors, teachers and school administrators for these prestigious Awards.

Educational workshops, seminars, and forums are held throughout the year to train educators to implement the requirements of the New Jersey Amistad Law. The law requires the integration of the history and contributions of African Americans into the full educational curriculum. The seminars offer various topics related to African- American history. Whenever possible these Seminars include information about Black History in New Jersey and in our local area.
Paul Robeson Lecture
The Paul Robeson Institute invites famous authors and scholars to speak about Black History and the consequences of racial prejudices for our Society. The lectures focus on the achievements and accomplishments of African Americans and their impact on society.
Black History Month
Robeson Program
February celebrates the cultural, artistic, athletic, and scholarly achievements of Paul Robeson, as well as other African Americans who made contributions of various kinds to enhance our American society. The Paul Robeson Institute supports the numerous events that are presented for Black History Month at RVCC.
Summer Institute on
Social Justice
The Educators’ Summer Institute on Social Justice is a hands-on workshop offering participants print, web-based and cinematic resources to help address the topic of “Confronting Racism.” The program includes interactive exercises and guest speakers. Participants have the opportunity to conduct research at the College’s Paul Robeson Institute Resource Room. In addition, the day includes information about student Service-Learning projects and options for publishing and disseminating best practices. Curriculum assistance includes various approaches for addressing Amistad mandates and a variety of lessons plans addressing state standards, grades 6-12, in social studies and language arts. Workshop participants receive 24 Professional Development Hours.
