Society and the Environment -- Society and the Environment is an examination of the interactions between people and the environment. The course will examine the concepts, actors and the processes of environment and society, of environmental and political philosophies, models of action, social movements and the prospects of creating sustainable societies. The course will meet on Fridays from 9:00am - 10:20am or students may do the work entirely online (except for the trip to St. John). Students interested in taking the couse as an independent study should contact the professor. This 3-credit course includes a service learning opportunity with the National Park Service and Friends of the Islands in St. John in the American Virgin Islands. Students will participate in a snorkeling trip, visit an abandoned sugar cane plantation, clean beaches, participate in an archeological dig for Taino remains at Cinnamon Bay, and tour the island. Students will also spend a day on St. Thomas touring the Old Fort, the Great House and the Top of the Mountain. Optional trips to the Baths in Virgin Gorda and Tortola in the British Virgin Islands will be available. Students will be housed in tree tents at the Maho Bay Campground, an internationally recognized leader in eco-tourism, and at the Virgin Islands Environmental Resource station in cabins. |
