CAITL In-College Sabbatical Program

Description: The Center for the Advancement of Innovative Teaching and Learning is interested in supporting researchers whose research can promote and support innovative teaching and learning practices. The recipient of an In-College Sabbatical is expected to produce and disseminate accurate, relevant, and timely educational research within and beyond RVCC.  The faculty member will be granted full release time at full pay for one semester or half pay for two semesters with the expectation of an on-campus presence.


SPECIFIC CRITERIA FOR THE IN-COLLEGE SABBATICAL
  • A written proposal outlining what the candidate intends to research during the academic year and what he/she could contribute to the college
  • A commitment of service on the CAITL Steering Committee for two years beginning in the academic year of the sabbatical and on the CAITL Advisory Board for the year following the sabbatical

APPLICATION PROCESS


Applications will be requested during the spring semester for one sabbatical to be awarded for the following academic year. Applicants must provide the following in electronic and hard copy:
  • A detailed research proposal (five page maximum) that includes:
    • A short descriptive research title
    • An abstract (one-half page or less)
    • Background information on research topic, references, etc.
    • A statement of relevant work already accomplished
    • Proposed research with sufficient detail for evaluation of expected results and an indication of measurable outcomes
    • A statement regarding significance of expected results
    • A statement citing the advantages of conducting the research at RVCC
  • A curriculum vita including a listing of courses developed and taught
  • A statement reflecting the candidate's approach to teaching and learning
There will be no in-house sabbaticals for the Spring, 2008 semester.  When sabbaticals are available, application materials should be sent as an email attachment in a single file to Steve Schwarz, Coordinator of CAITL. Applicants are encouraged to have their materials informally reviewed prior to the final submission deadline.


SELECTION PROCESS FOR IN-COLLEGE SABBATICAL

The CAITL steering committee will review all applications and recommend to the President the candidate for the In-College Sabbatical. Selection will be made on the basis of:
  • commitment to researching innovative teaching and learning practices/methods
  • clarity regarding the proposed research
  • evidence of potential to contribute substantively, based on expertise, to the College.
