Tips for Teaching a Hybrid:
- Take baby steps - do not try to do everything the first year
- Make sure you begin prepping the course at least one semester ahead of time
- Assign grades for online participation
- Use rubrics whenever possible to help quantify assessment
- Reuse your messages to students every semester
- Promptly answer emails posted to the online component!
- Keep the online gradebook up to date.
- Mentor with a seasoned hybrid instructor.
- Modularize content.
- Sequence content in a logical manner.
- Offer ancillary resources online.
- Create the content so it is as demanding as face-to-face time, but not so demanding that it suffers from the course and a half syndrome.
- Create a community of learners by offering group projects and activities.
- Assignments should address critical thinking skills.
- Course should be paced so students have time to apply concepts and skills they have learned.
- The more work you assign, the more grading you have. Keep this in perspective.
- Look for publisher content offered online.
