This instructional unit educates recruits in the evolution of corrections, the role of a correction officer, ethics, stress, affirmative action, and EEOC.
Criminal Justice System
In this instructional unit recruits are given an overview of the criminal justice system to include the new Jersey County Correctional System as well as probation and parole. The recruits are also educated on inmate rights and employee liabilities.
Human Relations in Corrections
The instructional unit focuses on the importance of establishing good human relations in a correctional setting. Recruits will learn about the characteristics of inmates, inmates with special needs, suicide prevention, inmate manipulation, inmate supervision and discipline, staff-inmate relations, inter-personal relations and communications, effects of dehumanization in the correctional setting, classification of inmates, and gang awareness.
Law / Title 2C
This unit will introduce the recruit to the structure, major components and basic principles of the New Jersey Code of Criminal Justice - Title 2C. The trainee will develop the ability to recognize violations that he or she may encounter. These violations include criminal homicide, assault and assault-related offenses, kidnapping, sexual offenses, arson and property destruction, burglary and criminal intrusion, robbery, theft offenses, forgery and fraudulent practices, bribery and corrupt influence, perjury and other falsification in official matters, obstructing governmental operations and escapes, misconduct or abuse in office, riot, disorderly conduct, firearms, other dangerous weapons and instruments, laws pertaining to juveniles, and controlled dangerous substances.
Legal Aspects of Arrest, Search, Seizure, and Evidence
This unit will educate the recruit on the legal requirements that must exist before an arrest can be made and the proper procedures for search and seizure of evidence. The unit will focus on constitutional rights, probable cause, public encounters, legal requirements and procedures of lawful arrest, use of force, and the legal requirements of non-institutional and institutional searches.
