RVCC graduates 345 in December ceremony

Congratulations are in order to 345 students graduating Dec. 18 at 6 p.m. in the RVCC Theater!

Students who completed requirements this fall and over the summer will participate in the commencement ceremonies.

A profile of the community of graduates shows that 210 are women, 135 are men. Most are between 20 and 29 years old. The youngest graduate is 19, the oldest is 66.

Student commencement speaker Barbara Engisch of Frenchtown is the typical, atypical older student. Attending RVCC while working full time, she’s a member of the first group of students in the College for Working Adults program to graduate.

The faculty speaker will be Communications Professor Bick Treut.

A Japanese student thinks about Sara Palin’s candidacy.

Thinking about Sarah Palin’s candidacy helps bring into focus some ideas about America and how Americans view what some call “traditional American values.”

One of the most important elections of our times is over. Many people were relieved when it ended, no matter who they voted for.

It wasn’t long before the media began bringing out some “issues” with Sarah Palin - as though journalists were finally able to talk about her frankly.  As someone who came to this country just two years ago, I found her values interesting, setting aside her apparent ignorance about the world beyond America’s borders.

Faculty Contract

Wearing T-shirts reading, “Ask why I don’t have a contract” to the most recent Board of Trustees meeting, 50 faculty protested contract talks that have been held up by disputes over salaries and benefits. The two sides were still far apart on Nov. 25.

Faculty have worked without a new contract since the last three-year agreement expired on June 30. With 15 members, the Board of Trustees is the college governing body that must approve any RVCC policy or financial decision.

The Record is the online newspaper of the RVCC community, designed, produced and written by students. With a focus on RVCC news, profiles, features and opinions, we publish regularly throughout the semester. Publishing online enables us to present material in a variety of formats, including print, photo gallery, audio and video.

To put out a quality newspaper requires many student volunteers: web designers and production people, reporters, writers, photographers, videographers, and even advertising reps.

If you would like to be part of The Record club, send us an e-mail. We meet Wednesday, 1:30-5:20 p.m. in West 213, but you don't have to be available during that time to be a part of the team.

Got a news tip, story or upcoming event you think the RVCC community ought to know about, send us an
e-mail.
