It takes dedication and ambition to achieve academic success, but sometimes students need a little guidance. That’s where the Academic Support Center (ASC) comes in.
The center welcomes all RVCC students and insists they drop by when ever they need help or even have a simple question. The ASC was remodeled last summer and now provides a larger, more comfortable space for students and their tutors.
“I found out that RVCC was a lot better than what people said it was going to be, thanks to the teachers, Mary Sullivan and the math tutors at ASC, who helped me get through my first semester,” said student Ralph Colatrella. In most math courses at RVCC, the professor will monitor students’ progress, and if they feel it to be necessary they write out a “prescription” to the tutoring center; assuring service at the ASC right away.
The tutors are a mix of professional tutors, professors and students. Students who want to be tutors need to have an “A” in the subject they would tutor, as well as a recommendation letter.
There is academic support for all aspects of the college, including accounting, astronomy, biology, chemistry, computer information systems, criminal justice, English, ESL, mathematics, philosophy, physics, social sciences and Spanish.
During the fall and spring semesters, the Academic Support Center’s open hours are:
Monday through Thursday: 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Friday: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Saturday: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
as well as two nights per week at the Franklin Center.
Hours may vary during summer and winter sessions.

“It’s free and we have lots of topics,” says Annette Skov, assistant coordinator at ASC. “People come once and they want to come back.”
