“I purposefully picked artwork representing many genres and forms of expression that symbolize the next generation of artists in America,” said Adam L. Rogers, director of admissions to the School of Visual Arts about the RVCC students’ juried exhibition on display this month at the campus gallery. “I believe that art is an expression of emotion and deep desire to communicate to one’s audience.”
And communicate they do. The work on display in this exhibition, which ran through Nov. 21 and included only work by RVCC students, featured a variety of forms, styles, subjects and mediums through which the artists expressed emotion.
Types of art included paintings, drawings, ceramic artwork, photography, digital prints, and computer graphics, and the titles alone were attention grabbing. Titles such as “Take a Look and You Will See” and “Behind My Closed Windows” inspire the imagination and encourage thinking about things we don’t normally notice in everyday life.
“I think it’s a great show,” says Chanel Harris, whose “Kokeshi Doll (object study)” could be seen at the gallery, which is on the bottom floor of the College Center, next to the Cyber Café. “There is a lot of variety … with many random pieces from different classes, subjects, and media.”
Students were encouraged to enter up to three of their creations for consideration by the faculty to be displayed in the gallery. “There is no award-equivalent to a ‘best in show’, however. They are all winners,” says Christopher Koep, an associate professor of the Visual and Performing Arts Department. Some of the pieces on display were even for sale -- for as much as $800. The Visual and Performing Arts Department at RVCC offers eight different degree programs, all of which encourage students to think creatively and develop communication through artistic expression. The department hosts many events and exhibitions in the gallery throughout the year.
A holiday art show and sale is planned for Nov. 28 to Dec. 1, with another student exhibition, featuring work done during independent studies, on display from Dec. 8 to Dec. 21.
The gallery is open throughout the afternoon and early evening, Monday through Thursday each week. Admission is free. For information, call (908) 218-8876 or visit www.raritanval.edu/departments/vapa.
