When the Raritan Valley Community College men’s golf team enters its 39th season this spring, only two players will have been members of last year’s successful 27-17 season. But Coach Augustine Eosso doesn’t think that the lack of veteran players will be a hurdle too high to clear.
Last season, with the help of returning players Scott Petzinger and John Senker, the team came in third in a very competitive region comprising teams from New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware.
“We had a slow start, but we worked very hard, finished strong and came up third in our region,” said Coach Eosso.
The team traveled to Cape May last year to compete on the Cape May National Golf Course. This two-day match was a qualifier for the National Junior College Championship. RVCC finished 10 shots behind the winner, Brookdale Community College.
Petzinger and Senker this year will be looked to as leaders and mentors, and they’ll be a critical part to a potentially very successful 2007 season. They’ll get help from Rick Gilligan, Robert Charneski, Jason Yanchuck, Tim Stilwell and Jonathan Mercurio, who are all first-year players.
The RVCC team will host three tournaments this season. The first two — the six team Garden State Athletic Conference Championship event and the Region XIX Championship — will be eighteen-hole events. The third is the two-day, thirty-six hole regional tournament.
Coach Eosso and the men’s golf team are eager to see RVCC students cheering them on at home matches. “They practice and work very hard to represent the school and would love all the support they can get,” he said. Practice and some matches are held at Fox Hollow Country Club and practices are also held at the Branchburg Family Golf Center.
