Winter Break means travel for some, but work for most. Classes resume Jan. 22, 2008.

We’ll Travel, Work and Kick Back on Break

Whether it’s a trip to the zoo, a road trip to Canada, or working and just hanging out with friends, students and professors let us in on what they are doing over winter break.

Biology major Mahum Azad from Bridgewater and law enforcement major Timothy Webb of Stewartsville said they’re going to be doing “the usual.” Azad said she will be working at Curves in Bridgewater and hanging out with her boyfriend. Then she might see some of her friends she hasn’t seen in a long time. She also plans to go shopping and see the new Steven King movie The Mist.

Webb will also be relaxing and hanging out with friends — when he’s not working at a grocery store or at his landscaping job, which, given the time of year, means he will probably be plowing snow. He also plans to visit his grandmother in Philadelphia.

Some are planning trips to farther-away places.

After hanging out with other high school friends home from college for the holiday, physical therapy major Nate Shalman of Warren plans a road trip to Canada. He will also be working at Chimney Rock Inn.

Early Childhood Education major Susan Park of Watchung is headed to Puerto Rico for a week with a friend to do some sight-seeing. When she comes home, most of her time will be spent working at the day care center Bright Horizons.

Professor Kelly Nicholson who teaches Philosophy Humanities, Social Science and Education plans to travel to Utah to visit family. He’ll take his son to the zoo and to the dinosaur museum there. The rest of the time, he said, “I plan to eat myself a little over the ways of good sense.”

Like Nicholson, Criminal Justice and Human Services major Maleka Burrell of Glen Gardner plans to travel inside the states. She is headed to Virginia to visit family. She’ll also try to raise money for a leukemia marathon.

For some, the opportunity to spend time at home is appealing in itself. Communications and Language Professor Traci Schanewolf recently married. She said she is going to be spending the break enjoying married life. She plans to enjoy her time off and prepare for the classes she will be teaching in the spring.
