RVCC students give back on a global scale. Rosie Tangtrakul’s “Hope for the Future” project is one example.
The project is part of a larger effort called HERO, which will ship food and schools supplies to children in Africa.
Tangtrakul and the International Club will raise funds throughout March to send to Pheshe Primary School in Pholela, South Africa. The school educates 200 children, grades one to five. Several New Jersey community colleges will also participate, including County College of Morris, Cumberland County College, and Bergen County College.
The parent organization, the United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA), wants to send a total of $21,789 to the students of Pheshe Primary for the construction of two new classrooms and three toilets. Tangtrakul has set a goal of $5,000.
International Club members will use several fundraisers to reach their goal. They plan to have a “fruit and tea” table (a healthy version of a bake sale) on March 27 and 28, and will place decorated coffee cans around the school and in local businesses to collect donations. They have also put up fliers that let students know about the project; “Small change = Big change,” they read, “so please remember that every dollar counts.”
Every dollar does count, Tangtrakul says, “$1 will feed a child for an entire week in South Africa.”
