The college increased security in high-risk areas after a series of break-ins this year. Jamar Beverly has worked as an RVCC security guard since late January.

Campus Crime Wave

Your car may not be safe in RVCC parking lots. Since the beginning of the semester there have been four break-ins. According to Reinhold Woykowski, Safety and Facilities Manager, “some had door locks popped and others had broken side windows.” Thieves took “tools in one and GPSs in others,” he said.

The break-ins are such a cause for concern around school that Woykowski increased security rounds in high risk areas. “We have two patrols in the lots,” he said. Woykowski said the thieves broke into the cars weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. They didn’t target a particular make or model.

This is not the first time at RVCC that Security has had to increase patrol in lots due to break-ins. “There were two cars stolen last year,” said Woykowski.

The break-ins this year were part of a series of thefts that occurred in the area during February. Although Woykowski has stepped up security, students need to be more alert and aware. He advises students parking in RVCC lots to keep their cars locked at all times and keep valuables out of sight.

When crime is committed on campus, Woykowski said, “The person who sees it is to report it to Security as soon as possible.” After the crime is reported, Security goes to the crime scene to take statements and write reports. Security will investigate the crime if it is minor, but otherwise “we contact the local police,” he said.

If you see a crime, report it as soon as possible. For information visit the Safety and Security Web site: raritanval.edu/departments/security. The site includes five years of crime statistics.
