Esperanza Tapia: Making a Difference

It’s raining outside, and in front of Branchburg ShopRite stands a small group of women. One of them is Esperanza Tapia, the leader of the Make a Difference Team

Tapia and her team members are hoping for generosity from others to donate baby items for a Baby Bundle drive. “There are people who ignore you, but you have to keep up the effort and let each person know how they can help,” Tapia says.

This is Tapia’s second semester with the Make a Difference Team. Tapia derives great satisfaction from her involvement with the team; however she does acknowledge the fact that it is difficult at times to keep volunteers committed. “As time approaches for a project there are volunteers who cancel and that is one of the difficulties,” Tapia says.

The Make a Difference Team volunteers at Birthday Buddies throwing birthday parties at the Adult Day Center; at Cereal Soiree collecting healthy cereal for families in need; and at the Family Fun Festival helping out at concession stands. Tapia chooses to participate in these programs, and will not withdraw from volunteering, even when set-backs occur.

Tapia used to volunteer at the Somerset Medical center; however being a full time student and being employed pulled her away from the hospital.

So why the Make a Difference Team? “I attend this college and spend half my time here, and if the club needs my help, then I will keep on committing,” Tapia says.

Becoming the leader of the Make a difference Team for RVCC is more feasible, allowing Tapia to still focus on school and maintain a job while volunteering her services.

What can possibly be the satisfaction of standing outside in the rain asking for donations? “The reason I joined the club is because I have always been interested in volunteering… the club is a good opportunity to bring out my volunteering services” Tapia said.

To join the Make a Difference Team, visit the club’s site in the Lion’s Den Groups. To donate, stop by the Student Activities Center.
