Message from the RVCC Foundation Chair

Dear Friends:
Once again, the important work underway at Raritan Valley Community College inspired so many of you to make a donation to the RVCC Foundation, and I thank you for your generosity and treasured partnership. Your gifts advanced the Foundation’s mission to help ensure that RVCC students have access to an affordable, quality education that makes such a positive difference in their lives. And in the process, you have contributed to the health and well-being of the communities in which we live.

Circle of Giving
Think about it! Unlike a traditional four-year institution, where students essentially visit the local college town for the sake of achieving an education, only to take their talents elsewhere upon graduation, a majority of our students are from this area, and statistics support that they remain in the area to become self-sustaining members of the workforce, who help drive the local economy.

RVCC students also are good citizens, who embrace the responsibility to give back to the community. So your gift not only provides a life-altering opportunity for a local student, but the circle of giving completes when that very student returns to help improve your own personal quality of life!

Transforming Lives
Consider the life-transforming experience made possible through scholarship support. Leanne, a single mom with two children, attended the first of her classes while living in a local shelter. We’ve seen such growth and commitment in Leanne that we have no doubt that she will eventually achieve her goal of becoming a social worker. Almost more importantly, as witness to Leanne’s pursuit of higher education, Leanne’s eight-year-old daughter now sets her sights on becoming a veterinarian. Donors to RVCC’s Foundation can all claim a part in this and other remarkable stories of success!

For some students, RVCC serves as the launching pad that propels them to amazing places and tremendously bright futures. Recently accepted to Cornell University, both Lorand and Casey are two of 36 community college students in the state selected to New Jersey’s All-State Academic Team. Lorand aspires to achieve a Master’s Degree in international relations and diplomacy, with the goal of one day becoming a diplomat in the U.S. Foreign Service. Casey is on track to eventually attend law school. These are wonderfully motivated and talented students who could not have done it without your financial support.

RVCC also serves adult learners, some of whom have been downsized and are returning to school to acquire new skills in order to succeed in today’s competitive job market. Thanks to your generosity, the Foundation is able to provide scholarship support to help defray the cost of tuition as they forge new paths during a challenging time in their lives.

RVCC is now engaging the community in the most ambitious campaign in its history to construct a vibrant state-of-the-art facility that will provide a dynamic learning environment and promote collaborative learning, information sharing and leadership training. The Ray Bateman Center for Student Life and Leadership will help advance the College’s unwavering commitment to transform lives by providing the highest quality education to our students.

Enriching Cultural Life in the Community
This past year, your donations helped the Theatre at RVCC bring culturally rich programs to thousands of local students, as well as families and theatre-goers in the region. The Foundation also raised funds to help support the Planetarium that welcomed over 27,000 students, teachers and members of the public to its facility and provided virtual tours of the solar system and across the universe to 100 billion galaxies. And the Institute for Holocaust and Genocide Studies celebrated its 30th anniversary, with an outpouring of support for its programs and services from the College and larger community.

Gratitude
As you can see, the campus is alive with opportunity and is amazingly adaptive to whatever needs exist in our community. Your donations make this all possible. Thank you!

As Chairman, I feel privileged to work alongside my fellow Foundation Board members and other volunteers, who helped us to achieve our fund-raising goals this past year. This is a wonderful institution, where students often relay to me their personal stories of encouragement and support that they received from RVCC’s dedicated faculty and staff.

I am particularly excited about the future prospects of the RVCC Foundation with the arrival of our new Foundation director Ronnie Weyl, a highly experienced fund-raising professional. She has joined forces with the very talented assistant director Maureen Kennedy, who has been such an asset to the organization for the past eight years. Together Ronnie and Maureen will create new opportunities for you to engage with the Foundation and discover how you can make a difference.

If you have not yet become a contributor to this great institution of learning, I’m hoping that you become inspired to join other individuals, local businesses and some of the region’s larger corporations in supporting the many wonderful things that private funds enable RVCC to achieve to change the lives of so many of our students and enhance the life of our communities.
