RVCC SETS RELAY FOR LIFE FOR AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY
For the fourth year in a row, Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) will sponsor American Cancer Society?s Relay For Life, Friday, April 25, to Saturday, April 26, from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m.
The overnight event?because cancer never sleeps?is designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research, advocacy, education and patient services programs. The event will be held on the outdoor track at the College?s North Branch Campus.
During the event, teams of people, all affiliated with RVCC, will be walking around the track. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.
Cancer survivors and caregivers will kickoff RVCC?s Relay by taking the first lap following the 6 p.m. opening ceremony. In addition, a Luminaria Ceremony, scheduled for 9 p.m., will pay tribute to those whose lives have been touched by cancer.
The evening will feature a variety of entertainment, including performances by such groups as Whiskey Down (4:30 p.m.), The BassBoards (7 p.m.), HelenaMaria (10 p.m.), Tracy Neal Jazz Band (midnight) and the Chris Bruno Band (1:30 a.m.).
The program will conclude with a closing ceremony on Saturday, April 26, at 8 a.m.
More than 160 people on 24 teams composed of RVCC students, staff and faculty and their friends and family are scheduled to take part in Relay For Life. So far, the College has raised more than $15,000 for American Cancer Society in connection with this event.
In 2005 RVCC was the first community college in New Jersey to sponsor the event. In its first three years of sponsoring Relay For Life, the College raised more than $125,000 for the organization?s fight against the deadly disease.
In case of rain, the Relay will be held in the College gymnasium. For further information about Relay For Life at RVCC, call Mary Sullivan, 908-526-1200, ext. 8318.
