RVCC TO OFFER DEGREE IN ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES
Beginning in the Fall 2008 Semester, Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) in North Branch will be offering a new degree in Environmental Studies.
The Associate of Arts in Environmental Studies program is an interdisciplinary major designed to teach students to examine environmental issues from a broad range of perspectives and analytical methods. About half of the program?s coursework will include classes in the biological and physical sciences; the other half will consist of courses in the humanities and social sciences, such as sociology, anthropology, philosophy, history and economics. The program will enable students to analyze the human and other causes of modern environmental problems, as well as devise strategies and solutions to address them. Students also will be encouraged to focus on a particular subject area of their interest, including social sciences, humanities, communications and languages, education, fine arts and economics.
The program is designed to prepare students for transfer into either Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree programs in Environmental Studies or other related fields. These programs could lead to a wide range of career opportunities in environmental policy and law, journalism, activism, business and education.
The major is being offered by the Department of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education in cooperation with the Department of Science and Engineering and other departments at the College.
