Raritan Valley Community Collegereceived the prestigious 1998 Service-Learning Collaboration awardfrom the Campus Compact National Center for Community Colleges.This award recognizes the outstanding work of the College'sService Learning Program with social service organizations in thefollowing areas:
  • Leadership in developing and implementingcollege and community collaborations
  • Development of quality learning opportunitiesfor community college students through service learning courses andreflection activities
  • Collaborative contributions to the communityand the potential for other community colleges to replicatecomponents of the Program.

PROGRAMDESCRIPTION
Service Learning at RaritanValley Community College involves students in organized communityservice that addresses local needs, while developing their academicskills, sense of civic responsibility and commitment to thecommunity. Students enroll in courses designated as servicelearning, perform community service as part of their coursework andreceive academic credit. Students reflect on their experiencesthrough journals, essays, research papers, group discussions andin-class presentations. Service learning is a requirement in over adozen courses, as well as an optional component, in numerousdisciplines across the curriculum.

PROGRAMPARTICIPATION
The Program began in the Springof 1993. Since then, it has witnessed dramatic growth and continuesto expand each year with increasing numbers of students, facultyand community partnerships. Annual program participationincludes:
  • 800 + students enroll in service learningcourses 
  • 70 faculty members support and teachservice learning courses 
  • 87 courses offer service learningopportunities 
  • 200 community organizations provide serviceplacements 
  • 17,000 hours of service are provided to thecommunity
