Addictions in Our World

Did you know that addiction is the #1 under-reported cause of death in the country? This brief overview identifies and discusses several of the many addictions in our world. The course discusses what addiction is and how to find help for those who suffer. Special emphasis is placed on substance abuse and what is an addict. Other issues such as exploration of recovery and relapse and can an addict learn moderation is discussed.

Target Audience: Nurses, LPN’s, health care professionals, and family and friends of those affected by addiction.

Administering Emergency Oxygen

This course provides the individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to give care to a victim of a breathing emergency using breathing devices. It covers:

AORN Perioperative Nursing Course 101 (Online)

This is an introductory course for RNs interested in a career in the Operating Room. The course consists of theory, rationale, and skills needed to provide safe patient care in the operating room. A 14-week online program covers online module and hand-on practice in the classroom. Students will be able to complete modules online on their own pace and in the location of their choice. Practicum clinical class session/clinical labs take place one Saturday per month at Somerset Medical Center on the following dates: January 12, February 23, March 22, April 19 and May 17. In addition one clinical observation experience is required on a weekday before February 9th, and may be arranged with your personal schedule. Consequently, you will only spend six (6) days in the classroom. Clinical rotation in the OR is not included in this course.

Upon successful completion of course (26 online module, clinical practice, and a passing grade on final exam), a certificate from The Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) with contact hours will be awarded.

Certified Nurse Aide (CNA)

Are you ready to enter into a rewarding career as a Certified Nursing Assistant? This course is approved by The New Jersey State Department of Health and Senior Services, prepares you for the NJ State competency evaluation and CNA licensure test. Certification allows you to work at long-term care facilities and other health care organizations. The course includes classroom lecture and nursing lab experience, and clinical practice at a long-term care facility. The course covers:

• Role of nursing assistant

• Providing safe and ethical basic nursing skills

• Communication skills

• Infection control and emergency procedures

• Personal care and resident’s rights

• Techniques for assisting the older adult

• Learn about common diseases

Prerequisites: a clear understanding of written and spoken English. We can also look for areas of self-stress, develop self-help tools to reduce them and support ourselves. Courts are increasingly turning to mediation as a viable mechanism for resolving familial conflict including Elder Care disputes. Helping parties manage their conflicts in a more productive and satisfying way then the traditional litigation process is the objective of Mediation. This timely and unique course provides health care professionals (nurses, social workers, geriatric care managers, therapist, counselors, physicians, and the like) with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand and appreciate the mediation process. EKG Analysis and Basic Arrhythmia

Are you interested in a position in telemetry, ICU/CCU or the emergency department, but have never read a cardiac monitor? Has it been years since you’ve read a cardiac monitor and want to brush up on your skills? This course is designed to provide health care professionals with an overview of:

EKG Technician National Certification 

Become certified in one of the most in-demand occupations. Obtaining an electrocardiogram (EKG) is often an important part of a medical workup. A properly recorded EKG may be critical in determining the proper care for a patient. This 40 hour course prepares individuals to function as an EKG Technician in a wide variety of settings including hospitals, physician’s offices, clinics, sport medicine facilities, nursing homes, and insurance companies. Participants:

• Review the anatomy and physiology of the heart

• Learn how to correctly operate the EKG machine

• Understand the components of the EKG waveform

• Identify how each component of the EKG waveform relates to cardiac function

• Understand Electrode placement and obtain the various signals

Emergency Response

This comprehensive 54 hour first-responder level course is ideal for anyone who is interested in a career involving a duty to respond in emergency, or those pursuing a healthcare career. It teaches the skills that a first responder needs to act as a crucial link in the emergency medical service (EMS) system. This course and optional add-on modules meet the 1995 Department of Transportation First Responders National Standard Curriculum. The course covers:

• First aid for injuries and sudden illnesses

• AED

• Preventing disease transmission-blood borne pathogens

• Assessing vital signs, blood pressure measurement

• Using basic and supplemental oxygen breathing devices

• Spinal injury management

• Muscle, bone and joint injuries

Food Handlers Certificate

In cooperation with Bridgewater Township, the Food Handlers Certificate offers food establishment representatives a one-session program focusing on Chapter 24 of the New Jersey Sanitary Code. Presented by a New Jersey State Licensed Environmental Health Specialist. The program provides an assessment of the practical application of food sanitation techniques involved in the operation of a retail food establishment. Primary issues of discussion include the cause, spread, and control of food and water-related diseases. Participants are provided interactive instruction on the proper sanitary techniques applied during food preparation, service and storage. Topics of discussion include the growth of bacteria and viral agents, prevention of food borne illness, common food allergens, sanitary facility design, personnel hygiene and application of recognized sanitation, self-inspection, and food security procedure. Participants receive an introduction to the basic elements of the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) systems approach to food production operations. Successful completion of a food safety certification program is a requirement of many municipal ordinances.

Forensic Evaluation for Child Abuse/Forensic
Identification in Mass Disasters

The recognition of child abuse injuries presents difficulties for the health professionals because of limited experience. This seminar provides visual descriptions for the early recognition and evaluation of child abuse injuries for reporting purposes. Recent mass disasters such as the World Trade Center, American Airlines Flight 587, and Hurricane Katrina have required the services of health professionals, law enforcement, and social/psychological personnel. Previous protocols for mass disasters are continually being reviewed and revised to better prepare these people for possible future disaster events. This seminar features:

Introduction to Forensic Nursing

Forensic Nursing is a relatively new and developing field. The scientific base of forensic nursing has increased tenfold over the past decade, with many in the ranks paving the way for technological advancements. This course introduces the role of a forensic specialist in nursing practice, with a focus on the forensic nursing process and the theoretical basis for comprehensive treatment of patients with interpersonal violence issues. Pharmacy Technician

Become certified in one of the most in-demand occupations today. This comprehensive 90-hour course is designed to provide hands-on training to individuals who seek a career as a Pharmacy Technician (PT). The role of the PT is to assist the pharmacist in all aspects of current pharmacy practice in retail and hospital environments. This course provides a fundamental understanding of the nature of pharmacy education and all necessary tools to permit the PT to become an effective extension of the Pharmacist. The course covers:

• Basic principles of pharmacology

• Medical terminology specific to pharmacy

• Reading and interpreting prescriptions

• Defining drugs by generic and brand names

• Dosage calculations/ dose conversions

• I.V. flow rates

Phlebotomy / Lab Assistant

If you’d like to become a Nationally Certified Phlebotomist, this is a course for you. Phlebotomists are integral members of the laboratory team who are trained in specimen collection and processing. This 180-hour course consists of lecture, lab, and clinical practice. It prepares you to seek employment as a phlebotomist in hospitals, outpatient clinics, medical practices, and insurance companies. The course consists of 100 hours of classroom instruction and 80 hours of clinical practice at a hospital. The clinical practice runs from 7:00am-3:30pm, Monday through Fri, for 10 days, scheduled at the end of the first month of the class. Course subjects include:

• Medical terminology

• Anatomy and physiology of the basic cell

• Circulatory system

• Arm and hand

• Basic hematology

• Blood collection

• Specimen transport and processing

• How to read prescriptions

Tourette syndrome, ADHD, OCD, related disorders and learning disabilities are addressed. The diagnosis/clinical assessment of Tourette Syndrome are explained along with current medical interventions.
