Educational Philosophy
Education is a lifelong process. We can no longer be limited in our planning to the "traditional" college age student filling our classes. The strength of our enrollments will increasingly depend on our ability to provide the kind of learning experiences that part-time learners desire in their pursuit of personal and career satisfaction.
The central characters in the teaching-learning process remain the student and his/her teachers. The college administration and staff are there to facilitate student-faculty interaction so that effective learning happens and mutual satisfaction results. Leadership provides the suitable environment through strategic planning and careful utilization of budgeted funds.
Outside scrutiny has been on the increase and will continue to grow. The best response to such outside pressures will be to keep in mind the "bottom line": What will be the impact of a particular decision on our students and the community we serve? I wonder sometimes if we are too timid in our off-campus world in admitting that striving toward the goal of a cultured society remains most worthwhile in that when one uses ones talents to the utmost, the greater good of the community usually is served well.
Future stability will be best cultivated in an atmosphere of collegiality and trust. My approach to any leadership role on campus has been to give consistent evidence to those who take their education seriously that faculty and administrators take each other's ideas seriously. We should be no more timid and no less forthright in setting each other straight than in questioning our students about their progress or lack of it. If we are demanding of each other in setting reasonable goals and standards of performance, we are not kidding each other or the students whom we serve.
