Educational Background
I have had a rich and diverse educational background. As a lifelong student,
among the many colleges and universities that I have attended are the University
of Wisconsin, the Graduate and University and Graduate Center of the City University
of New York, New York University, University of Southern California, and
Southern California University for Professional Studies. I hold degrees
in medical sociology and nursing, have studied social policy, gerontology, and
social work on the graduate level and am currently at work on a doctoral
degree in psychology. During the summer of 2001, I was a participant in an Infusing
Asian Studies into the Undergraduate Curriculum at the East-West Center of the
University of Hawai'i.
Educational Philosophy
Sociology is the study of men and women as members of social groups. It
is a field that overlaps with many other academic disciplines and in many
ways is an interdisciplinary field itself. My goal in teaching courses
in sociology is to provide students with a framework from which they can
examine their lives sociologically by identifying and understanding the
various social forces that impact on their lives. By doing this, students
learn to think critically about themselves and the worlds they live in
and to make connections between these various influences.
