Usenet/Discussion Groups

Usenet also knows as NEWS or NETNEWS is a collection of discussion groups involving millions of people from all over the world. This started at Duke and University of North Carolina universities first.

Individual contributions/articles to these news groups are known as postings.

Discussion articles are read with the help of a newsreader. On UNIX machines one uses newsreaders such as: tin, nn, etc.

We could also use the Web Browsers such as Netscape & Microsoft Explorer,Lynx or programs such as Winvn to read news.

News is obtained from a NNTP server (Network News Transfer Protocol). In turn this server may get a feed from some other machine.
