Association
of Community College Trustees’ (ACCT) 2003 M. Dale Ensign Trustee
Award
Raymond H. Bateman, Chairman of the Raritan Valley Community College Board
of Trustees, has been awarded the prestigious Association of Community
College Trustees’ (ACCT) 2003 M. Dale Ensign Trustee Award for his
leadership role in advancing RVCC and community colleges throughout New
Jersey.
The national organization annually honors an individual who has made a
significant contribution as a lay trustee toward promoting the community
college concept. The award is named after one of ACCT’s pioneers
and the third president of the association, M. Dale Ensign, who was a
trustee for many years at Northwest Community College in Powell, Wyoming.
Bateman had been nominated for the award by the RVCC Board of Trustees
and the New Jersey Council of County Colleges because of his outstanding
contributions toward strengthening community colleges in New Jersey. Since
the Council was created in 1989, Bateman is the first NJ community college
trustee to win the national award. The North Branch resident also received
ACCT’s Northeast Region “Trustee Leadership Award” in
June 2003.
2003 Management Recognition Award
Raritan Valley Community College President Dr. G. Jeremiah Ryan has received
the "2003 Management Recognition Award" from the National Council
for Research and Planning (NCRP). Dr. Ryan received the award for his
commitment to information-based management and for his role in the first-ever
economic impact analysis of RVCC, which was based on a comprehensive economic
model developed with funding from the Association for Community College
Trustees.
The "Management Recognition Award" is given to an institution's
chief executive officer who, in the judgment of the NCRP Executive Board,
has made a significant contribution to the advancement of research, planning
and information-based management.
RVCC Selected as Model of Civic Engagement
Campus Compact,
a national organization composed of more than 800 colleges and universities
that support Service Learning initiatives, has selected RVCC’s Service
Learning program as a model of exemplary practices of civic engagement.
A Campus Compact representative visited RVCC in February
2003 and met with members of the College administration, faculty, students
and community members in order to prepare a profile of best practices
describing RVCC’s work with service learning and the civic engagement
movement. Campus Compact is conducting approximately a dozen similar visits
across the country; The visits will form the basis of profiles of the
colleges that will be included in a book on civic engagement in higher
education.
21st Annual Land
Development and Planning Awards
RVCC’s
Christine Todd Whitman Science Center was recognized in December 2002
by the Somerset County Planning Board as part of the 21st annual Land
Development and Planning Awards. The Center was honored for its design
and landscaping in the institutional category.
Award of Excellence—Franklin
Township Chamber of Commerce
RVCC received
an award of excellence from the Franklin Township Chamber of Commerce
in December 2002. The College is one of six companies to receive the honor
for its support to Franklin Township and the Franklin Township Chamber
of Commerce.
