CLEP, DANTES & NYU FOREIGN LANGUAGE EXAM — Detailed Information

Accelerated Programs Standardized Testing Policy

Students may apply for credit by exam before or after admission. Credit by exam will not be awarded, however, until the student has been admitted to a degree or certificate program. At that time, students may receive credit if the exam is applicable to their program and if their score meets the established minimum. Students will receive notification of an award of credit from the Records and Registration Office approximately two months after the date of the test.

A maximum of 45 credits can be earned through a combination of all forms of advanced standing. A student must complete at least 15 credits through course work at RVCC. Credit by exam is not treated as part of the student's course schedule for establishing full-time or part-time status. Unsatisfactory scores are not recorded on the student's permanent record. Credit will not be entered into a student's grade-point average. Credit by testing will not be granted to students who have completed courses with a "D" or "F" grade, nor for courses that have been audited at RVCC or other institutions.

Students who have received credit for a course may not receive credit by exam for a prerequisite or lower level course in the same subject. Students who have registered for a course will not be eligible to take credit by exam for that course unless it is officially withdrawn from before the end of the fourth week of classes. If a student attempts credit by exam covering two semesters of course work, and the student has already completed the first semester of such course work, only half of the credit awarded by exam will be granted. It is the responsibility of the student to determine that the test taken will fit into the appropriate program without duplication of credit. If you have questions, check with a counselor or advisor.

Departmental Exams
A Departmental Exam is an option for a student who wants to earn credit by assessment in a subject that is not available through CLEP or DANTES. Students are encouraged to go to the Course Outlines, which are accessible from the drop-down menu on the RVCC home page, to find comprehensive course information. After reviewing the course outline, the student would then complete the Departmental exam request form, available in Student Enrollment Services. Upon approval of this request by Susan Hagen in Student Enrollment Services, the form will be sent to the academic department for assignment to a faculty member. The student will be contacted by the faculty member administering the test in order to schedule a mutually convenient time. On occasion, the tests will be left in the Test Center for the student. At the time of testing, the student is required to bring a photo ID and payment at the rate of $40 per credit attempted.
