Educational Goals and Learning Objectives, Academic Reading and Writing, III

Goals:

In Academic English Reading and Writing Level III, students will engage in the primary tasks of any academic pursuit at a high intermediate level: reading, critical thinking, research, and expository writing.  Students will use what they know about English to improve comprehension in reading, apply knowledge to writing tasks, and analyze information that they receive from texts, electronic sources, and other sources.  Students will also synthesize information they discover and evaluate the relevance of that information.  

Learning Outcomes:

At the conclusion of Academic English Reading and Writing III, students should be able to

  • Read short assignments at a speed of 150 words per minute
  • State the main idea of a text
  • Identify rhetorical modes according to key features of texts
  • Recall facts from readings(fill in the blank, multiple choice, and short answers)
  • Preview content to predict content and connect content to background knowledge
  • Paraphrase key points from a text
  • Read longer texts with a 2300+ vocabulary level (Penguin Reader level V)
  • State opinions in response to reading
  • Use information from reading to make inferences
  • Scan readings to find specific information

 In addition, at the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • Identify all parts of an entry in an English-English dictionary
  • Match meaning and/or grammatical function to prefixes and suffixes
  • Label synonyms and antonyms
  • Find register and connotations for new vocabulary words
  • Use syntactic clues to determine parts of speech

 Also, by the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • Summarize texts
  • Use brainstorming techniques (concept maps, lists, and free writing) to generate ideas for writing
  • Use outlines and graphic organizers to plan writing
  • Write paragraphs with topic sentences, supporting details, appropriate cohesive elements, and accuracy in mechanics
  • Plan and write a coherent, five-paragraph essay (compare/contrast, cause/effect, opinion, description, narrative)
  • Revise written work, based on teacher comments
  • Self-edit written work

 Finally, at the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Use a word processor to create a document
  • Save, retrieve, and edit documents on the computer
  • Access class information through the Lion's Den (login required)
  • Find an appropriate graded reader in the Library
  • Use electronic communication to request and receive feedback on written work
