ABSTRACT

Civic engagement as a classroom learning strategy can be effectively accomplished through the service-learning initiative, which incorporates the concepts of learning to serve and serving to learn. The presenters will discuss classroom learning activities and techniques to engage students in campus/community partnerships, application of theoretically based knowledge in the contemporary work world, promotion of an effective work ethic, and development of a life-long commitment to volunteerism and civic responsibility.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Identify theoretical concepts of service-learning in the classroom
  • Delineate techniques to promote civic responsibility and engagement through classroom/community activities
  • Discuss techniques to establish community linkages which promote learning outcomes
  • Examine methods which enhance effective student reflection
  • Propose projects which will incorporate theoretical knowledge in a community based setting
  • Examine techniques to evaluate achievement of learning outcomes
