Hiring Qualifications for Tutors at the Academic Support Center
To work as a tutor at the Academic Support Center, you must meet the following criteria:
- Prospective peer tutors must have completed one full semester prior to tutoring and must be currently enrolled in at least one course for credit at RVCC. Exceptions may be made for students able to demonstrate potential.
- Prospective peer tutors must be high school graduates or have a GED.
- Prospective tutors must have a B+ or better in the course(s) they wish to tutor and at least a solid 3.0 cumulative grade-point average. Exceptions may be made for students able to demonstrate potential.
- After the first interview with the Director of Tutoring Services, prospective peer tutors will need to submit two letters of recommendation from their instructors attesting to their academic capabilities, communication skills, and ability to relate to students with varying backgrounds.
- Prospective tutors with advanced degrees, who are interested in tutoring in their expertise, may be considered for hiring. Copies of transcripts and two letters of recommendation will be required after the first interview with the Director of Tutoring Services.
- Prospective tutors must make a commitment to tutoring for at least one full semester.
- Prospective tutors must be interviewed by the Director of Tutoring Services and must complete all necessary paperwork in order to be hired.
If you are interested in becoming a tutor and meet the above mentioned qualifications, please complete the attached APPLICATION and AVAILABILITY form and drop them off at The Academic Support Center, S-020 or Human Resources.
