e-Mentoring
members have agreed to provide general academic, career and job search advice.
They should be contacted for basic information only. e-Mentors should not be expected
to provide job leads or interviews. With this in mind, review the following table
for suggestions of appropriate questions you might ask when contacting e-Mentors:
- What
is the nature of your job?
- Could
you describe a typical week?
- How does
your academic background relate to your job?
- What
skills are necessary to succeed in this field?
- What
other opportunities relate to your college major?
- Where
does this career path lead?
- What
are your career goals?
- Can
you tell me about the industry in which you work?
- What
advanced degrees are necessary to enter/advance in this field?
- How
did you find your current position?
- What
is your opinion on the outlook of this career field?
- What
do you like best/least about this field?
- What
advice do you have for someone wanting to break into this field?
After an
e-Mentoring contact has been helpful and willing to speak with you, it would
be appropriate to send a thank you letter or email message. Finally, feel free
to speak with someone at your Career Services office for assistance with contacting
e-Mentors. Good Luck!
