Raritan Valley Community College’s chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society received several international awards at the international honor society’s annual convention, held April 3-7 in Orlando, FL. RVCC’s chapter, Alpha Epsilon Pi, competed against 1300 Phi Theta Kappa chapters worldwide.

During the convention’s Hallmark award ceremony, the chapter received the Distinguished Chapter Award. To receive this award, the chapter must be ranked among the top 40 internationally.

Alpha Epsilon Pi also received one of 50 Distinguished College Project awards honoring the chapter’s efforts to raise funds to induct high-achieving students participating in the RVCC Prison Education program into the honor society.

This endeavor was important to the members of Phi Theta Kappa due to the College’s partnership with the New Jersey Department of Corrections and the New Jersey Parole Board in providing higher education courses for incarcerated students. The Prison Education program also assists individuals with their transition to college life upon release into the community. The College’s chapter inducted 102 new members currently incarcerated throughout the state. These students earned 15 college credits from RVCC while maintaining a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

In addition, the chapter officer team received one of 30 Distinguished Chapter Officer Team awards. This award recognizes exceptional leadership among officer teams. The current officer team includes: Kathleen Stavole (President), Mathias Squillace (Vice President), Sakshi Kulshrestha (Vice President of Leadership and Fellowship), Alyssa Darden (Co-Vice President of Scholarship and Service), Anthony Garcia (Co-Vice President of Scholarship and Service) and Hien Ngo (Vice President of Secretary and Membership).

Ranked by BestColleges.com, WalletHub.com, and Niche.com as the #1 community college in New Jersey, Raritan Valley Community College has been serving as an academic and cultural center for Somerset and Hunterdon County residents for 50 years. The College has been nationally recognized for its service to the community, environmental stewardship, and commitment to diversity. It is home to a Planetarium, Science Education Institute and 3M Observatory; a 1,000-seat Theatre offering professional performances for all ages; and an Honors College for high achieving students.

The College offers more than 90 associate degrees and certificates, as well as career training, small business assistance through the Small Business Development Center, professional development, and adult and youth personal enrichment courses.
