As RVCC gears up to begin celebrating its 50th anniversary this fall, the College can reflect on the successes of its past year including adopting a new strategic plan; launching a very successful mentoring program with Sanofi; receiving national and state honors for its Service Learning Program; and releasing the results of an economic impact study confirming RVCC’s positive impact on the regional economy and students.

New Strategic Plan Approved

In October 2017, after a yearlong process involving input from community members, business leaders, local educators, government officials, the RVCC community, and others, the RVCC Board of Trustees approved a three-year strategic plan.

The 2018-2021 strategic plan focuses on four broad “pillars” that will direct the College’s resources for the next three years: increase student success rates; implement a strategic enrollment management plan; increase strategic external partnerships; and increase equity, sustainability, collaboration, and civic engagement.

Economic Impact Study

An economic impact study, released in January by Emsi of Moscow, ID, shows that RVCC has a significant, positive impact on the regional economy and benefits students by raising their lifetime earnings and quality of life.

The study details the role RVCC plays in promoting economic development, enhancing students’ careers, and improving the quality of life for residents in Somerset and Hunterdon Counties.

National, State Honors for Service Learning

RVCC students were honored both nationally and on a state level in 2017-2018 for their service to the community. In recognition of her commitment to finding solutions for challenges facing communities, RVCC student Amber Lindsay was selected in March as a national Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact. Lindsay, an Environmental Science major at RVCC, joined 268 students from across the country for this honor.

The Newman Civic Fellowship is a one-year experience emphasizing personal, professional, and civic growth. Through the fellowship, Campus Compact provides a variety of learning and networking opportunities, including a national conference of Newman Civic Fellows in partnership with the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate.

In June, the students of RVCC’s award-winning Service Learning Program also were honored with the 2018 New Jersey State Governor’s Jefferson Award for their extraordinary volunteer service to the community. The prestigious awards program annually highlights the spirit of civic engagement among New Jersey’s 1.5 million volunteers and awards medals in 22 categories of volunteer service. The RVCC students were honored in the “Youth Volunteer Group” category.

Sanofi Corporate Mentor Program

After coming to the US from Nigeria in 2014, Janet Adeleke felt she needed some extra help navigating college life and transitioning into the professional world. The RVCC student found the help she needed thanks to the Sanofi US Corporate Mentor Program, which connects RVCC students with industry professionals to enhance their educational experience.

Adeleke was one of 10 RVCC students participating in the first year of the mentoring program, which was launched with a $40,000 grant from Sanofi NA Corporate Social Responsibility. The structured mentoring program also offers an enriching experience for Sanofi volunteer mentors, who are mid- and senior-level employees representing science and research; technology; marketing and communications; and business and finance.
