Theatre Fundraising Event to Support RVCC’s Robeson Programs

Tuesday, January 31, 2017
Dar He

The Raritan Valley Community College Foundation and the College’s Office of Multicultural Affairs will a hold a special evening of theatre and conversation Friday, February 17, at 7 p.m., at the Theatre at RVCC, Branchburg. The event, which is open to the public, will raise funds for the College’s Paul Robeson Institute for Ethics, Leadership and Social Justice and the Paul Robeson Youth Achievement Awards program.

Tickets to the fundraiser cost $50 per person. Merrill Lynch Wealth Management in Bridgewater is the exclusive sponsor of the event.

The evening will include the production of Dar He: The Story of Emmett Till, a one-person, multiple-character, original drama featuring actor and playwright Mike Wiley. His riveting play chronicles the murder, trial, and unbelievable confession of the men accused of Emmett Till's lynching in 1955 Chicago. A question-and-answer session will follow the performance in the Theatre. Afterwards, guests attending the fundraiser will enjoy a private wine & cheese and dessert reception and will have the opportunity to mingle with Wiley.

The late Evelyn Field of Somerville, a member of the RVCC Board of Trustees for more than 40 years, spearheaded the establishment of the Paul Robeson Institute at RVCC in 1999 to promote Robeson's ideals, beliefs, values, and vision for a world of justice and peace. In 2003, the Paul Robeson Resource Room, located on the first floor of RVCC’s Evelyn S. Field Library, opened its doors. The Resource Room serves as a repository for educational materials, historical records, and memorabilia of Robeson's Somerville years and the worldwide accomplishments of people of African-American descent.

The Paul Robeson Youth Achievement Awards program helps to preserve Robeson's legacy as a role model for excellence as an artist, athlete, orator, and scholar. Every year, RVCC’s Office of Multicultural Affairs invites outstanding African-American middle school and high school students in the surrounding area to a special ceremony on campus to be recognized for their achievements and leadership in scholarship, arts, athletics, and community service.
