Raritan Valley Community College offers a comprehensive English as a Second Language Program (ESL).
You can choose to improve your conversational skills, grammar, prepare for university studies, or reduce your accent. Our classes are listed in the course schedule under ESLS (English as a Second Language Studies).
WHAT CAN I STUDY AT RVCC?

- Accent Reduction and Pronunciation
- Preparation for English Language Studies is offered to students with no English language experience.
This course introduces the new English language student to grammar, speaking and listening, and study skills.
ARE THE INSTRUCTORS QUALIFIED?
Our instructors are trained professionals with a Master’s degree in ESL and have experience teaching English.
WHAT ARE THE FACILITIES LIKE AT RVCC?
You will study in modern classrooms and use the latest technology in state of the art computer labs that are open from morning to late at night. Our library has many novels and other books specifically for ESLS students. A free tutoring service is also available to provide you with extra help. In your leisure time, you may use the swimming pool and fitness room without charge. RVCC has a rich campus life with many scheduled activities that offer discounted rates to students including; dances, lectures, bus trips, musical concerts, theater productions and planetarium shows http://www.raritanval.edu/planetarium.
WHEN CAN I TAKE CLASSES?
Classes are offered fall, spring and summer semesters during the day and evenings. See the course schedule.
WILL I GET ENOUGH ATTENTION FROM MY INSTRUCTORS?
Class sizes are small (18 students maximum)
WHO WILL MY CLASSMATES BE?
Students from 73 countries, speaking over 65 languages, have studied English as a Second Language here at RVCC. When you sign-up for ESL classes at RVCC, you will be entering a multi-cultural environment where you will meet and study with students from around the world.
HOW WILL I KNOW WHICH CLASSES ARE RIGHT FOR ME?
An ESL Placement Test and advisor will help you choose your classes. Testing and advising services are free for RVCC ESL students.
HOW DO I GET STARTED?
| Go to the Enrollment Services Office in College Center, level 1. | Fill out an application and pay the $25 application fee. |
| Next go to the Testing Center in Somerset hall, basement level (near the Welcome Center). | Take the ESL Placement Test (the test will take between 2 and 2 1/2 hours to complete). |
| Meet with an advisor in College Center, level 1. | Select your classes. |
AM I ELIGIBLE FOR FINANCIAL AID?
Most students who have declared a major are eligible for Financial Aid. Interested students should visit the Financial Aid Office in College Center, Level 1.
WHO WILL WATCH MY CHILDREN?
RVCC has its own Children's Campus that provides a caring environment for infants, toddlers and preschoolers between 9:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Call 908-231-8807 for enrollment information.
