Video Game Design & Development

Video game creators design and code video games, which could include everything from creating the concept, to executing the technical design, to testing for bugs, and more.

According to Recruiter.com, vacancies for video game design careers have increased by 5.31 percent nationwide since 2019. Demand is projected to go up, with 32,090 new jobs expected to be filled by 2029. RVCC offers associate degree programs in both Game Art and Game Development, allowing students to focus on specific aspects of the field. Students have access to well-equipped studios and the latest computer software and hardware as they learn in-demand skills and become immersed in industry standard art techniques and game design technologies.

  • Game Art: RVCC’s Game Art A.S. program trains students in industry standard art making techniques and technologies specific to game design and related interactive media. Students also will be exposed to digital video production, audio production, and other multimedia skills. The program prepares students who are interested in transferring to Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) and Bachelor of Science (B.S.) programs at four-year institutions and professional technical and art schools.
  • Game Development: RVCC’s Game Development A.S. program provides students with an understanding of the video game and interactive simulation industry as well as an understanding of how these tools shape and are shaped by our society. The program prepares students for entry-level positions in game systems design and programming, quality assurance testing, virtual and augmented reality creation, and interactive simulation and data visualization.

The College also hosts a site for the annual Global Game Jam, and many RVCC game students participate in the event. This year's Game Jam drew over 35,000 participants worldwide from more than 800 virtual and in-person sites in over 100 countries. In total, 20 RVCC jammers built six games using the event's theme, “Make Me Laugh.”
