Providing meaningful, inclusive support

Paul Robeson (1898–1976) was born and raised in New Jersey, spending his early years in Somerville and completing school there. He rose to international prominence as a cultural figure and social advocate whose impact shaped the 20th century. Known for his intellectual depth and athletic achievement, he distinguished himself at Rutgers University as a valedictorian and later completed legal studies at Columbia.

Celebrated worldwide for his commanding voice and work in theater and cinema, Robeson stood firmly for fairness and dignity. He devoted his life to confronting injustice, uplifting working people, and calling for a more humane world, leaving an enduring imprint of principled leadership and artistic excellence.

Established in 1999, the Institute honors Paul Robeson’s life and influence in the place that shaped his development as a creative, thinker, speaker, and champion. It seeks to inspire a worldwide community that reflects his principles and commitment to cultural understanding, equity, and lasting peace.

Our Initiatives

Youth Achievement Awards

Founded in 1990, this event celebrates middle and high school students of African descent—including African-American, African-Caribbean, and BIPOC youth—alongside any students who reflect Paul Robeson’s ideals, character, and leadership.

Honors are presented in the fields where Robeson thrived: academics, creative expression, civic engagement, and sports, with special “Renaissance Awards” recognizing students who achieve across several areas.

Kente Ceremony

The Paul Robeson Institute is honored to take part in the yearly Kente Ceremony, a lively celebration of heritage and tradition that unites the Raritan community in shared pride. Featuring the Kente Cloth as a symbol of accomplishment, the event offers graduates a meaningful cultural experience while recognizing the family members and supporters whose guidance and encouragement contributed to their success at RVCC.
