Advising for Every Goal: From Degree to Transfer

Advising for First-Time Students

First-time students are assigned an academic advisor based on their major. The advisors help students understand degree requirements, register for classes, develop an academic plan, connect with campus resources, and begin planning for the transfer process. Students must attend a ROARS (Raritan Orientation Advising Registration Sessions) before registration for the first semester of classes.

Advising for Incoming Transfer Students

Students who have earned 12+ credits at another college or university will be assigned an Incoming Transfer Advisor, who will email you shortly after you apply to RVCC. The Incoming Transfer Advisor will encourage you to send your official transcript(s) to Enrollment Services for review of possible transfer of credit. The Incoming Transfer Advisor can use your official or unofficial transcripts to conduct an immediate transcript review and assist you in registering for classes. Schedule an advising appointment for an incoming transfer here. Have questions about the transfer-in process? Email transferservices@raritanval.edu.

Advising for Early Credit High School Students

Current high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors with a GPA of 3.0 or greater can apply to RVCC as Early Credit, non-matriculating students. Prospective EC students and their parents/guardians will meet with an EC advisor to register for courses. For more detailed information about the Early Credit program and application requirements, please visit our Early Credit page.

Transfer (After RVCC) Advising

It is important to us that our students transfer to institutions that meet their future academic and career goals. Additionally, we want students to learn how to maximize the transfer of their credits to their four-year school. Our transfer advising team assists students in selecting and applying to a four-year school before graduation from RVCC.

You don’t have to wait for your final semester at RVCC to begin thinking about transferring. Meet with our transfer team and ask your questions early! Email transferservices@raritanval.edu to make an appointment with a Transfer Advisor to ask your individual transfer questions.

Transfer Events

Did you know that four-year colleges visit RVCC many times throughout the semester? Advising and Transfer Services sponsors transfer fairs, information sessions, Instant Decision Days, and “tabling days”, when representatives from four-year colleges spend a day on campus. This is a great opportunity for students to visit their table and ask any questions about the transfer options for that school.

A list of transfer events and general transfer information is available on the Transfer RV Commons page.

Advising for Prospective International Students

A special advisor is available to assist foreign students planning to attend RVCC on F-1 visas. The advisor will walk you through the admissions process step by step. For additional information, contact Elizabeth Sullivan at elizabeth.sullivan@raritanval.edu or 908-526-1200 x8452.

Workshops on Succeeding in College

We conduct workshops throughout the year to help you deal with the pressures of school, family, and life. Topics include: time management, managing test anxiety, effective note-taking, relaxation techniques, and strengthening personal relationships. For additional information, contact Jonathan Pintauro at jonathan.pintauro@raritanval.edu.

Services for Adult Learners

Returning to the classroom after many years can be challenging and stressful. We offer special services to help you make a successful transition to college and balance school, family, and work. We can also offer guidance on how to earn credits for prior learning experience. Contact Michelle Amparbin at michelle.amparbin@raritanval.edu.
