Starting without a label

Not everyone begins college knowing exactly what they want to do — and that’s completely normal. Feeling undecided doesn’t mean you’re behind or unprepared. It simply means you’re still discovering what interests you and what feels right.

At RVCC, undecided is treated as a starting point, not a problem to solve. This pathway gives you room to explore, build confidence, and move forward without pressure to commit too early.

Why start undecided?

Choosing undecided allows you to:

  • explore different areas of interest before committing
  • build foundational college skills and confidence
  • make informed decisions with guidance and support
  • adjust direction as your goals become clearer

What matters most is progress — learning what works for you and keeping options open.

You’re not doing this alone

Advisors and support teams are available to help you talk through options, understand requirements, and plan next steps as your interests develop. Support is built into the undecided experience from the start.

Skills that transfer

As an undecided student, you build transferable skills such as:

  • critical thinking and communication
  • time management and organization
  • academic confidence and self-direction

These skills support success in any program or career path you choose next.

Flexible by design

Undecided pathways allow flexibility in course selection and scheduling, making it easier to balance learning with work, family, or other responsibilities while you explore options.

Focused on what comes next

While undecided isn’t tied to a single career, it prepares you to move forward with clarity — whether that means choosing a degree program, transferring to a four-year institution, or pursuing a more focused path once your goals take shape.
