Introduction to Teaching

The Introduction to Teaching: 50 Hour Preservice Course is the first step for individuals pursuing New Jersey’s Alternate Route to Teaching certification pathway. Designed for candidates who hold a bachelor’s degree, this course explores the teaching profession while satisfying the required preservice training component needed to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility.

Participants complete classroom instruction, observation hours, and clinical experiences while preparing for continued Alternate Route coursework through Brookdale Community College.

 

Teaching Assistant Paraprofessional Training

This three-level professional development program prepares current and aspiring paraprofessionals, substitute teachers, and classroom assistants to effectively support students and educators.

The training progresses from foundational classroom practices to advanced instructional strategies and specialized student support techniques.

Introduction to Teaching: Alternate Route to Teaching

The Introduction to Teaching: 50 Hour Preservice Course provides the required preservice training for candidates pursuing New Jersey’s Alternate Route teacher certification process.

Eligibility Requirements

To become eligible for employment as an Alternate Route teacher in New Jersey, candidates must:

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  • Meet the minimum GPA requirements
  • Pass the Praxis II exam in their certification area
  • Complete a 50-Hour Preservice Course
  • Apply for a Certificate of Eligibility through the NJ Department of Education

About the Instructor

Dr. Kathryn Suk brings more than 27 years of educational experience and is herself a graduate of the Alternate Route program. Her career spans K-12 education, educational leadership, and nearly two decades preparing future educators at the community college level.

Teaching Assistant Paraprofessional Training

Qualified classroom assistants are increasingly important members of today’s educational teams. This professional development series helps participants build the skills needed to support student success in inclusive learning environments.

Level 1: Essential Foundations

Introduces the core responsibilities, expectations, and professional practices required of successful paraprofessionals.
