The Pray Family Center for Service Learning and Civic Engagement

The Pray Family Center for Service Learning and Civic Engagement helps RVCC students connect classroom learning with meaningful service in the community. Through service-learning courses, volunteer opportunities, and partnerships with local organizations, students can explore causes they care about, build practical skills, and make a positive impact beyond campus.

Learning That Makes a Difference

Service learning allows students to apply what they learn in class to real situations in the community. These experiences deepen understanding, strengthen skills, and show how education can create positive change beyond campus.

By engaging with local partners, students gain insight into social challenges while discovering how their unique talents can help build a better world.

Why it

Matters

Service and experiential learning help students grow in ways textbooks alone cannot.

  • Turn classroom knowledge into practical action
  • Address real challenges in local communities
  • Build a sense of purpose and belonging
  • Develop leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills
  • Stand out when transferring or applying for jobs

These experiences shape confident, engaged, and career-ready graduates.

Two ways

to get involved

Students can participate through academic courses or independent service opportunities, making it easy to find a path that fits their goals and schedule.

Service Learning Courses

Service Learning integrates community service directly into your coursework. In designated classes, students participate in service projects connected to course themes and learning outcomes.

Through guided reflection, students deepen their understanding of academic content while earning course credit. Service Learning may be required or optional, depending on the class, and is offered across many disciplines.

This approach brings coursework to life through collaboration with community partners.

Co-Curricular Service

Not enrolled in a Service Learning course? You can still make a difference.

Co-curricular service allows any student to volunteer independently of their academic schedule. It’s flexible, meaningful, and ideal for students who want to support causes they care about while building experience.

RVCC works with more than 250 community partners, giving students opportunities to connect with causes, organizations, and experiences that match their interests. Service experiences may also be documented through an engagement transcript, helping students tell the story of their impact when applying for jobs, scholarships, transfer, or future opportunities.
