The RVCC Testing Center is where your college journey often begins. We handle placement testing for new students and a full range of other exams — make-ups, online and distance-learning tests, credit-by-exam, and certified proctoring for the community — all in a secure, supportive setting where you can do your best work.
Most students come to us first for placement testing. RVCC is committed to equipping you with the skills necessary for success in college, so before you enroll, we make sure you’re set up in the right courses for English, Math, World Languages, and/or ESL.
RVCC accepts SAT, ACT, PARCC or NJSLA, NJGPA (ELA only), CLEP, AP exams, and recent high school math classes (completed within the last five years) to determine placement. Use the sections below to find the details for your subject. Students who want to challenge their initial placement in Math or English can take RVCC’s placement test, the ACCUPLACER assessment.

First Time College Student Placement
Step 1: Check the Chart to see if you are ready for placement.

Step 2: Submit your test scores to the Admissions Office

- Please download the score report pdf (with your first and last name on report) from College Board (https://www.collegeboard.org/).
- Save the pdf to your desktop or file so that you can email as attachment to admissionsdataentry@raritanval.edu .
- If you prefer, submit your official scores from College Board directly. The RVCC code for submitting SAT test scores is 2867.
ACT:
- Please download the score report pdf (with your first and last name on report) from ACT (http://www.act.org/).
- Save the pdf to your desktop or file so that you can email as attachment to admissionsdataentry@raritanval.edu
- If you prefer, submit your official scores from ACT directly. The RVCC code for submitting ACT test scores is 2609.
PARCC or NJSLA:

Step 3: If Your Test Scores Don’t Qualify You for Automatic Placement in English, No Problem.
If your exam scores don’t quality you for automatic placement in English please check your math courses below to see if you need to take the placement exam for both subjects.
Advanced Placement
The following AP exams are accepted by RVCC:
- English Lit/Comp, score of 3+ gives credit for both ENGL 111 and ENGL 112
- English Language, score of 3+ gives credit for both ENGL 111 and ENGL 112
Placement for All Other Students
You are exempt from English Placement Testing if you:
- Have taken an Accuplacer placement test at another New Jersey college
- Have completed at least 24 college credits
- Have satisfactorily completed college courses in English
- Have a qualifying test score? See First Tme College Student Chart above
Math Placement
Degree seeking students who did not receive a placement after completing their application or are looking to improve on their assigned placement can do so by taking the Accuplacer placement test.
However, you may not need to take a placement exam if the information below applies to you:
- You took an Accuplacer placement test at another New Jersey college.
- Click here for instructions on how to share your scores.
- You have satisfactorily completed college level courses in mathematics.
- To formally have credits transferred over to RVCC, an official transcript must be sent from your previous institution(s) to the RVCC Enrollment Services office. Contact registrar@raritanval.edu with questions pertaining to receipt/evaluation of your transcript(s).

ESL-English as a Second Language

World Languages Survey
Placement in World Language Class
To ensure accurate placement in Spanish or ASL courses, all students are now required to complete the World Language Survey before registering for a class.
Complete the World Language Survey
All students—regardless of prior experience—must fill out the World Language Survey. This survey helps determine the appropriate course level based on your background and experience with the language.
More Testing Center Services
Beyond placement, the Testing Center proctors a range of exams for students, faculty, and the community.
Credit by Exam (CLEP, DSST/DANTES & more)
Earn college credit for what you already know. We administer CLEP, DSST (DANTES), and the NYU Foreign Language Exam. Appointments are required for CLEP and DSST. See Alternative Academic Credit Options for exams accepted and credit awarded.
Make-Up & Course Exams
Taking a make-up or course exam for an RVCC class? Book an appointment before you come, and confirm with your professor that they’ve submitted your exam to the Testing Center. Bring a valid photo ID.
Distance Learning & Proctored Exams
We proctor online and distance-learning exams for RVCC students. Appointments are required. For outside proctoring requests, call 908-526-1200, ext. 8401, or email tcenter@raritanval.edu.
Community & Certification Testing
As a certified testing site, we provide proctoring services to the community, following National College Testing Association standards. Call or email us to arrange an appointment.
Other Exams
We also administer the Technological Competency Placement Exam and offer Scantron scoring.
Before You Test: What to Know
- Bring a valid photo ID. A physical ID is required for every exam — photos or pictures of an ID can’t be accepted.
- Apply first for placement tests. To take placement tests, you’ll need to apply for admission to RVCC — online or in person through Admissions or Enrollment Services.
- Accuplacer retakes: each section can be taken up to 3 times, with a $10 retest fee per section.
- Appointments are required for: distance-learning proctored exams, CLEP, and DSST.
- Need accommodations? If you have a documented disability, contact the Office of Disability Services at 908-526-1200 x8534 or caie@raritanval.edu to set up accommodations before your placement exam.
