Prepare for a Career Behind the Science of Healthcare

Medical laboratory technicians play an essential role in patient care. They perform laboratory tests that help doctors and other healthcare providers prevent, diagnose, monitor, and treat disease.

RVCC’s Medical Laboratory Technology AAS program prepares students for entry into the healthcare field as medical laboratory technicians. Through classroom instruction, laboratory practice, and clinical experience, students build the knowledge and skills needed to work as part of a medical laboratory team.

About the Program

The Medical Laboratory Technology program combines science, hands-on laboratory training, and clinical experience.

Students learn in areas such as:

  • Clinical microbiology
  • Clinical chemistry
  • Hematology
  • Immunology
  • Immunohematology
  • Urinalysis
  • Specimen collection and processing

The program prepares students to take the national MLT(ASCP) certification exam. Earning the degree from RVCC is not dependent on passing the certification exam.

Program Mission

The mission of the Medical Laboratory Technology program is to prepare individuals from diverse backgrounds for employment by providing quality classroom and clinical training.

The program is committed to producing knowledgeable, professionally skilled medical laboratory technicians who can think critically, work effectively as part of a healthcare team, and understand the importance of continuing education in medical laboratory science.

Program Structure

The Medical Laboratory Technology program includes two parts:

Pre-Clinical Program

Students begin by completing general education and foundation courses, usually while enrolled as Health Science majors with a Pre-MLT focus.

Clinical Program

After completing the pre-clinical requirements, eligible students may apply for selective admission to the MLT Clinical Program.

The MLT Clinical Program runs from July through June. During the clinical portion, students must be available for daytime classes and must have reliable transportation to clinical sites. Some clinical rotations may be scheduled during evening or overnight shifts.
