A new art installation by Ji Yong Kim, Assistant Professor, Arts & Design department, is on display at the Public Storage building at 133 2nd Street in Jersey City.

Titled “Currents of the Hudson,” the multi-layered, mixed media work focuses on Jersey City's history as an industrial port and its diverse community, highlighting the Hudson River's role in the city's growth.

The installation is on view in the Public Storage building’s display windows. To create a three-dimensional effect, Professor Kim uses painted, half-inch foam boards that are stacked in layers. This technique gives depth to the scenes of the river, cargo ships, and railroad tracks.

The artwork also recognizes Jersey City’s diverse population. Included in the installation are the national birds of several countries, such as the Philippines, India, Mexico, Lebanon, and Egypt, which represent the city’s many immigrant communities. The birds are hung from the ceiling with transparent fishing line, making them appear to fly above the scene.

Overall, the installation connects Jersey City’s industrial past with its natural waterfront setting and the cultural diversity of its residents today.

The project was made possible by the Exchange Place Alliance, with support from the Powerhouse Arts District Neighborhood Association.
