A Reason to Smile: Meet Aspiring Dentist Bryan Auccapina-Aliaga

From a young age, Bryan Auccapina-Aliaga had a deep curiosity about science. “It started when I was a kid watching science shows on TV,” he says. “I found it fascinating how much there was to learn about the human body and the world around us.”
Over time, that curiosity evolved into a decision to pursue a career in healthcare. “I’ve always been drawn to helping others,” says Bryan, a first-generation college student who recently earned an Associate of Science degree in Biological Sciences from Raritan Valley Community College. “Growing up, I saw how limited access to healthcare impacted my family, and it motivated me to choose a career where I could make a difference. Dentistry became the perfect path—it combines science, service, and the power to change someone’s life through a smile.”
Though RVCC wasn’t originally on Bryan’s radar, a conversation with his high school counselor changed everything. “She asked if I had considered RVCC, and at first, I hadn’t,” he recalls. “But once I started learning about the programs, support systems, and opportunities, I realized it was the right place to start. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve made.”
Bryan came to RVCC through the Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF), a program that provides eligible students in New Jersey with academic and economic assistance to help them earn their college degree. “The EOF summer orientation made all the difference,” says Bryan. “It gave me confidence and a sense of belonging right from the start. Knowing I wasn’t alone in this journey helped ease a lot of my fears.”
During his time at RVCC, Bryan held leadership roles as President of the Orgullo Latino Club, Vice President of Administration for the National Society of Leadership & Success, and Vice President of Membership & Recruitment for the Activities Board. “Being part of those organizations helped me grow in ways I never expected,” he says. “I developed skills in communication, event planning, and leadership—all while building a strong support network.”
Bryan’s academic success and commitment to leadership earned him several honors, including induction into Phi Theta Kappa, the National Society of Leadership & Success, the EOF Graduate Achievement Award, the 2024 Student Worker of the Year Award, and three Student Leader Celebration Awards for Outstanding Leadership. He also volunteered at Open House events, served as a New Student Orientation Leader, and earned spots on the Dean’s List in Fall 2023, Spring 2024, and Spring 2025.
One of Bryan’s most meaningful campus experiences was working in the Student Life Office, where he was encouraged to step out of his comfort zone and embrace new challenges. “That job opened so many doors,” he says. “I met inspiring people, including college leadership and other student leaders who pushed me to keep growing.”
Now that he’s earned his biology associate degree, Bryan plans to transfer to a four-year university to complete his Bachelor’s degree in biology, with the ultimate goal of attending dental school. “My dream is to become a dentist and bring quality care to communities like the one I grew up in,” he shares. “I want to be a role model for other first-gen students and prove that it’s possible to achieve your goals no matter where you start.”
Graduating from RVCC represents more than academic success for Bryan—it’s a celebration of family, culture, and resilience. “This isn’t just my accomplishment—it’s my family’s too,” he says. “Especially for my younger brothers, I hope my journey shows them that anything is possible with dedication and heart.”
As Bryan moves forward on the path towards dentistry, his time at RVCC remains a powerful foundation. “RVCC gave me more than an education,” he says. “It gave me the confidence to lead, the support to succeed, and the belief that I can make a real impact.”
