After 25 years climbing the corporate ladder in the health insurance industry, Michelle Amparbin got news that changed everything: her position had been eliminated. For many, it would have felt like the end of the road—but Michelle saw it as a new beginning.

“The day I got that email, I told my husband, if this is happening, I’m going back to school. And that was it. No second-guessing,” she recalls. That moment sparked an unexpected reinvention, leading her to become an adult learner at Raritan Valley Community College at age 42.

While pursuing her Associate Degree in Business at RVCC, Michelle fully immersed herself in campus life. “I wanted to make sure I felt part of the community,” she says. “Joining clubs, taking on leadership roles, volunteering, and connecting with both traditional and nontraditional students was key.”

While at RVCC, Michelle became the very first recipient of the Sophie Sadowsky Chmil Memorial Scholarship, awarded to non-traditional female students pursuing studies in fields such as accounting, business administration, financial services, paralegal studies, or international business. She not only excelled academically—graduating magna cum laude—but also left her mark on campus. Michelle was honored on RVCC’s Success Wall, a distinction reserved for students who graduate with honors and make significant contributions to the college community.

Her success at RVCC paved the way to Drew University, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Business, receiving scholarships and being inducted into an academic honor society for adult learners. Michelle later completed a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Rutgers University, graduating summa cum laude. She was recognized as the Outstanding Student in her Master’s program, honored for both her academic excellence and her work mentoring incoming freshmen. “I was determined,” she laughs. “And my husband was my biggest cheerleader through it all.”

Michelle’s professional background, combined with her journey as an adult learner, makes her uniquely qualified for her current role—leading RVCC’s Adult Learning Experience. “I know what it’s like to balance work, school, and family, and to feel nervous walking into a classroom full of younger students,” she explains. “I want adult learners to know it’s OK. There’s a support system here to help you cross that finish line.”

In her role, Michelle recruits adult learners, guides them through course registration, and provides advice on academic and career decisions. She also connects students to scholarships and resources to ensure financial challenges don’t hold them back.

“Adult learners bring invaluable experience to the classroom,” she says. “And they can also learn new skills from younger students, especially technology. It’s a two-way street that enriches the learning environment for everyone.”

Michelle’s own story inspires the students she works with. “I always say, you could be 50 with a degree or 50 without—what would you prefer?” she asks. “Earning your degree opens doors, increases your earning potential, and gives a sense of personal fulfillment. Being an adult learner isn’t easy, but it’s worth it. And if I can do it after 25 years in corporate without a degree, anyone can.”
