In recognition of National Coming Out Day and the five-year anniversary of marriage equality, Raritan Valley Community College’s Diversity Council will host a screening and discussion of the award-winning documentary, Love Wins, October 11, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The event, which is free of charge and open to the public, will be held in the Conference Center at the College’s Branchburg campus.

The 30-minute film follows a New Jersey couple's journey from a closeted existence raising a family in the 1960s, to the women’s present life as legally recognized spouses following the Supreme Court's 2013 affirmation of marriage equality. The film depicts the hard-fought, decades-long battles for GLBTQ individuals and their families to achieve basic civil rights, from the years prior to 1969’s Stonewall Riots to the present.

The film was screened as an official selection at the Vail International Film Festival in Colorado this past spring. Love Wins has been named Best Documentary (short) at the Red Bank Indie Street Film Festival, the Garden State Film Festival, QFEST LGBT Film Festival and the New Hope International Film Festival, and was an official selection and finalist in the Black Maria Film Festival and the Jersey Shore Film Festival.

The RVCC screening will be followed by an interactive panel discussion with Jan Moore and Emily Sonessa (the film’s co-stars), Robin Kampf (filmmaker), and the advocacy group Garden State Equality. The discussion will focus on exploring the importance of the film and the GLBTQ community’s remaining challenges for equal rights.

The event also will include informational tables for student and community-wide organizations, as well as voter registration information. For additional information, contact Isabel T. Gutierrez at isabel.gutierrez@raritanval.edu.

RVCC is located at 118 Lamington Road in Branchburg, NJ. For further information, visit www.raritanval.edu.
