October is jam packed with a wonderful array of offerings at The Theatre at Raritan Valley Community College in Branchburg. RVCCArts’ upcoming presentations include a show depicting experiences of young Muslim New Yorkers, a concert of Latin jazz and Cuban music, hysterical political comedy, children’s theatre, and a piece about dementia told though music and movement. The following shows will be offered:

Beyond Sacred: Voices of Muslim Identity (Ping Chong + Company), Friday, October 12, at 7 p.m.; $15 & $25

With stark simplicity and a narrative that feels remarkably relevant in today’s world, Beyond Sacred stages the personal and complex stories of five young Muslim New Yorkers at a time of increasing Islamophobia. The interview-based theatre production illuminates the daily experiences of individuals who reflect a wide range of Muslim identities; yet they share the commonality of coming of age after 9/11 and of being the “other” in America. Together, their true stories create a beautiful, funny, and intensely poignant cry for tolerance at a time when such sentiments are more necessary than ever.

Tiempo Libre in Concert, Friday, October 19, at 8 p.m.; $15 & $25

Modern heirs to the rich musical tradition of the group’s native Cuba, the musicians of Miami-based Tiempo Libre are known for imaginative and high voltage performances that deliver the hard-driving, seductive rhythms of “timba”—an irresistible, dance-inducing mix of Latin jazz and Cuban son, a type of music and dance that originated in eastern Cuba in the late 19th century. Classically trained at Cuba’s premier conservatories, this Grammy-nominated group is committed to sharing the Latin musical heritage and reinvigorating traditional Cuban music with a youthful, modern sound. For the past 14 years, the band has been featured on numerous television shows including The Tonight Show, Live from Lincoln Center and Dancing with the Stars.

The Capitol Steps, Saturday, October 20, at 8 p.m.; $35 & 45

For over 35 years the Capitol Steps performers have been putting politics and scandal to music. This season The Capitol Steps plans to bring down the house—and Senate—with its unique blend of music and political comedy, including songs from the group’s newest album, Make America Grin Again. With these equal-opportunity satirists poking fun at all side of the issues, an evening with The Capitol Steps may be the only thing sure to earn bipartisan support. What more would you expect from the group that puts the “MOCK” in Democracy?

The Rainbow Fish (Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia), Sunday, October 21, at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.; $10 (Recommended for ages 2 and older). The 1 p.m. show is a “relaxed” performance that offers an inclusive environment that is welcoming for all theatre audiences.

Meet the most beautiful fish in the sea, whose scales shimmer in all the colors of the rainbow. In this award-winning production about the colorful fish who learned to share his most prized possession, the Rainbow Fish will enchant even the youngest child with his silver scales and heart of gold. This original stage adaptation brings Marcus Pfister’s enchanting story to life along with two of the author’s companion tales, Rainbow Fish Discovers the Deep Sea and Opposites. Innovative puppetry, striking scenic effects and evocative original music provide young audiences with an effortless introduction to the performing arts and the excitement of reading.

The Nature of Forgetting (Theatre Re), Saturday, October 27, at 8 p.m.; $25 & $35

Through movement and compelling live music, The Nature of Forgetting tells the story of a middle-aged father struggling with the early stages of dementia: a life-affirming journey into a weakened mind where broken does not have to mean defeated. Collaborating with neuroscientist Kate Jeffery, London-based Theatre Re has created a moving articulation of the countless dimensions of memory and amnesia, linking science with real-life experience. The piece offers a journey of shining humanity and a celebration of a life well lived.

For tickets to any of the productions, call the Box Office, 908-725-3420, or order online at www.rvccArts.org. Subscribers’ packages are available for most Theatre series. Senior citizen, student and group discounts are also available for most performances.
