Dr. Melanie Lenahan, Professor of Biology, is joining with Karen Cangialosi (RIOS Institute), Sam Donovan (BioQUEST Curriculum Consortium), Carlos Goller (North Carolina State University), and Carrie Diaz (Bates College) as a co-lead on a new project, “Developing Resources for an Undergraduate Open Science-Open Pedagogy Program.”

The project’s goal is to create a set of openly licensed, adaptable materials that faculty can implement to develop a comprehensive, undergraduate open science education program.

As a co-lead, Dr. Lenahan will create several assignments and develop courses that include alternative grading, open pedagogy, and science education reform.

By educating undergraduate students, the project’s creators strive to prepare future generations of scientists to work from less competitive, more open, and inclusive frameworks. For science students who do not become professional scientists, understanding the value of open science as members of the public also will be beneficial.

The funded initiative is part of the Open Research Community Accelerator (ORCA) that supports the adoption of open science through promoting collaborations effecting systems-level change. ORCA, with support from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, has launched the Open Scholarship Catalytic Awards Program, which funds small projects working to stimulate a culture of open scholarship (encompassing open science, open research, open data, and a range of other open-sharing practices that promote transparency, reproducibility, community engagement, and collaboration) at US-based, traditionally under-resourced institutions.
