RVCC major:

Liberal Arts/Social Science

Why RVCC:

I kept hearing good things about The College’s ranking and social science program. When I went to the Open House I was struck by how kind and helpful everyone was. I love that it’s a smaller school with only one campus and small class sizes.

Professors:

The professors here are willing to mentor you, provide advice, and help you make contacts and connections. One of my favorite professors is Dr. Jennifer Pearce-Morris, who inspired me to minor in sociology for my Bachelor’s Degree.

Overcoming Obstacles:

I’m the first person in my family to go to college. I came to the U.S. from Mexico at age 1. Don’t let anything stop you from realizing your dreams.

Affording College:

I didn’t think I’d be able to afford to go to college. Thanks to the NJ Community College Opportunity Grant (CCOG) and Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF), I was able to earn my Associate Degree at RVCC at almost no cost. The EOF office was such a great help with this process.

Activities & Achievements:

Recipient of the 2021 Raritan Valley Community College Non-profit Civic Engagement Award; President of RVCC’s ESL Club; RVCC Open House volunteer and Spanish translator; Volunteer for Safe + Sound Somerset, an organization that helps survivors of domestic violence.

Future Plans:

I just transferred to Rutgers University, where I’m majoring in social work and minoring in sociology. After I receive my Bachelor’s Degree, I’m planning to attend law school and pursue a career in immigration and family law.
