Honor Society Wins Several Awards at Regional Competition
Raritan Valley Community College’s (RVCC) chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society received several regional awards at the organization’s 32nd annual Middle States Regional Convention, held March 15-17 in Harrisburg, PA.
RVCC’s chapter, Alpha Epsilon Pi, competed against 79 Phi Theta Kappa chapters in the Middle States Region. The region includes chapters from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and Washington, DC.
The College’s chapter earned several honors at the convention, including Distinguished Chapter (third overall in the entire region), Distinguished Officer Team, and the Honors in Action Theme Award. Chapter President Kathleen Stavole and Vice President of Membership and Secretary Hien Ngo also were named to the Middle States Officer Hall of Fame.
The chapter’s award-winning College Project raised funds to sponsor Phi Theta Kappa membership to high-achieving students participating in the RVCC Prison Program. RVCC’s Prison Education program works with the State of New Jersey Department of Corrections and the New Jersey State Parole Board to provide higher education courses for students under the custody of the State of New Jersey while they are incarcerated. The program also assists with their transition to college life upon their release into the community.
The College’s chapter inducted 102 new members currently incarcerated throughout the state. These students have all earned 15 college credits from RVCC while maintaining a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
