Students entering Raritan Valley Community College’s Cosmetology or Esthetics programs may apply for a new $1000 scholarship supported by Color it Forward Inc., a New Jersey not-for-profit organization.

“We are looking for candidates who have an interest in using their craft to give back” to the community, said Michelle Gill, cosmetologist and owner of Social the Salon in Whitehouse Station. Gill founded the non-profit in 2015 to help women in transitional situations gain confidence by providing free salon services. “We provide haircuts, color, waxing services, and whatever else the client needs to confidently re-enter the workforce and gain back her economic independence,” said Gill. “Reaching out through Beauty” is at the core of the organization’s mission, she added.

“It is an honor that the RVCC Beauty Professions program was selected to receive this scholarship. Color It Forward is a wonderful organization, and it aligns with the domestic violence awareness training that RVCC students receive through the CUT IT OUT program. Women coming out of a domestic violence situation need the support to transition back into the community and beyond,” said Marcia Bird, Program Director, RVCC Beauty Professions.

Those interested in applying for the Pay It Forward scholarship should complete an online application at https://raritanval.awardspring.com/. Applicants must be a resident of Somerset or Hunterdon County. Those applying for the scholarship also must write a one-page essay indicating how they will use the skills learned in RVCC’s Cosmetology/Esthetics program to serve their communities throughout their career.
