Raritan Valley Community College’s Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) students participated in Backpack Awareness Day at the Lafayette Elementary School, part of the Bound Brook School District, on September 23. The OTA students observed how the children put on and took off their backpacks, then weighed each student’s backpack and made sure it was fitted properly for each child.

The school’s staff also was educated about the importance of a properly fitting backpack. Information about Backpack Awareness Day was sent home to the children’s parents.

In 2018, RVCC became the only community college in New Jersey to offer an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree for an in-demand career as an Occupational Therapy Assistant. Occupational Therapy Assistants collaborate with Occupational Therapists to help people improve their functions so they can carry on daily life activities. They provide rehabilitative services to individuals with physical, emotional, mental or developmental impairments. From teaching a stroke victim to brush his teeth, to helping a child in a wheelchair navigate a school hallway, Occupational Therapy Assistants help people of all ages handle daily tasks and regain their independence.

RVCC’s OTA program is currently accepting applications for the fifth cohort starting in the Spring 2023 Semester in January.
